To create worthwhile jobs that people want to fulfill the company’s goals and objectives. The role of human resources is to be the architect of work. They also put a sign at the kitchen entry that said “This kitchen is for resale purposes only.” Ha! Define is a boutique Landscape Architectural practice specialising in residential & commercial projects, consulting to the development industry and private clients. So years later, they built their dream home and, taking the architect’s suggestion, included a kitchen. They took the bar napkin to an architect and said, “This is our dream home, draw us a blue print.” The architect looked at the napkin and asked, “Can I make one suggestion? Put a kitchen in it.” And one night they sketched out their dream home on a bar napkin. He and his wife would go out to dinner every night. It reminds me of the funny story about someone I worked with years ago: HR is responsible for taking a holistic approach to work and making sure any changes align with the goals of the organization.
And they get their job done by not only designing but communicating their design to clients, builders, and others. What does an architect do? They’re responsible for creating functional, safe, aesthetically pleasing, economical structures. So when I have to describe what HR does, I like to say – HR is the architect of work.
By far.īut then, when I try to explain what HR does, it becomes this long list of things – benefits, compensation, safety, employee relations, etc. But it’s certainly not the sum and substance of the role. Which is true, human resources often has responsibility in the recruitment arena.
Whenever people ask me what I do and I say “human resources”, their first response is … oh, you hire people. Recommendations are made on the format and structure of pre-briefing conversations and on designers' strategies for raising the level of information provided by the user beyond the functional or structural attributes of space.Human resources is a tough profession to define. We explore the contextual features of meetings and the conversational strategies taken by the architect to prompt the users for information and the influence these had on the information provided. We report an empirical study of pre-briefing conversations in which the overwhelming majority of the exchanges were about the functional or structural attributes of space, discussion that touched on the phenomenological, perceptual and the symbolic meanings of space were rare. The purpose of the research is to gain insight into the type of information users exchange with architects in early design conversations and to better understand the influence the format of design interactions and interactional behaviours have on the exchange of information. The paper is an investigation of the exchange of ideas and information between an architect and building users in the early stages of the building design process before the design brief or any drawings have been produced.
